John “Jack” H. Edmondson, long-time Hollister resident, passed away Feb. 3 at William & Inez Mabie Skilled Nursing Center at the age of 79.

Jack, as he was affectionally known, was born in Brawley, but came to Hollister 74 years ago. He attended Hollister Grammar School, San Benito High School, and graduated from San Benito Jr. College. During World War II, Mr. Edmondson served with the U.S. Navy  aboard the U.S.S Steamer Bay, an aircraft carrier, spending time in the South Pacific. After being discharged Jack spent a total of 37 years in the San Benito County Agricultural Commissioners Office, and was the County Ag Commissioner from 1959 – 1984. He also had the distinction of serving one year as President of the California Agricultural Commission.

Jack’s memberships included Sacred Heart Church, the Bolado Golf Club and Bolado Mens Group. He was an avid golfer. He belonged to the Hollister Lodge No. 1436, BPOE; the SIRS at the airport, as well as the Italian Catholic Federation. Jack and his wife Mary celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on April 18.

“He was devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren ” said his wife Mary. “Even from the time they were very little, he was always there to baby sit and spend time with them.”

Besides his spouse Mary Cosco Edmondson, Jack is survived by his son Gary Edmondson and spouse Karen of LeGrand; a daughter, Joan Moore and spouse Tim of Hollister; his grandchildren Kristin Edmondson of San Francisco; Mark Edmondson of Sacramento; and Jennifer and Juliana Hall of Hollister.

Following Jacks wishes, arrangements have been made for private cremation at Grunnagle Ament Nelson Crematory 870 San Benito St., Hollister with placement of his cremains at Calvary Cemetery.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, Feb. 7 at 12:30pm at Sacred Heart Church Fifth and College streets in Hollister.

Memorials are preferred to the Hollister Relay For Life or the V.N.A.  c/o Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home.
