MONTEREY

The San Benito girls soccer team kicked off their 2008-09 season with a rather easy 7-1 victory against host Santa Catalina on Wednesday in Monterey.

New coach Ben Alvarez, the former boys coach at San Benito High who is taking over for Mike Schurig, certainly began his tenure on the right foot.

“We played well. We dominated,” Alvarez said.

The Lady ‘Balers were held to just a single goal in the first half, however, and it wasn’t pocketed until approximately the 30th minute, Alvarez said.

In the second half, though, Alvarez changed formations, from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2.

“That formation worked really well for us. We just dominated,” he said. “Every eight to 10 minutes we were scoring goals. It was like clockwork.”

The Lady ‘Balers built a comfortable 6-0 lead before Santa Catalina was able to break the shutout.

Sophie Coelho and Hannah Cobb each led San Benito with two goals apiece, while Coelho tallied an assist as well. JC Clayton (one assist), Daniela Ocampo (one assist) and Tyran Lester each pocketed a single score for the Lady ‘Balers.

San Benito (1-0) will play next Thursday, Nov. 20, at North Monterey County. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
