A local bicyclist was killed in an accident on San Benito Street
after he reportedly darted out into traffic and was struck by a
pickup truck Saturday night.
Francisco San Ramon, 54, of Hollister was pronounced dead at
8:50 p.m. in a trauma unit at San Jose Medical Center, the Santa
Clara County Coroner’s Office said.

Francisco San Ramon, 54, of Hollister was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. in a trauma unit at San Jose Medical Center, the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office said.
Although an autopsy is scheduled for this week to determine the exact cause of death, the preliminary indications are that San Ramon died from multiple blunt force trauma sustained in the accident.
The Hollister Police Department said the accident is still under investigation so there is no determination on who was at fault.
The 6:30 p.m. accident happened when San Ramon was riding a bicycle southbound on the eastern side of San Benito Street, police said.
For an unknown reason, San Ramon crossed the northbound lanes of San Benito Street and followed behind an unidentified car for a short distance and then tried to cut across the remaining southbound lane near 140 San Benito St., police said.
When San Ramon tried to dart across the street, he reportedly cut directly in front of a southbound pickup truck, police said.
The driver of the pickup, whose name was not available by press time this morning, could not stop in time to avoid striking San Ramon and his bicycle, police said.
Police shut down San Benito Street between First and Third streets for more than an hour allowing a Cal-Star helicopter to land in the middle of the street.
The helicopter immediately flew the critically injured San Ramon to a trauma unit at San Jose Medical Center. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts at the hospital, he died from his injuries, police said.
