A 20-year-old Hollister man was assaulted by several males Friday night outside the Mars Hill Coffeehouse downtown and had to be transported to the hospital for treatment, according to Hollister police Sgt. David Westrick.

Officers responded about 8:30 p.m. to a report of a fight at Mars Hill Coffeehouse in the 600 block of San Benito Street.

The victim told investigators he had been standing in front of the business when a male asked him for a cigarette. When he declined, four to six males attacked him, punching and kicking him, with one of them using a crow bar to hit the man in the face, police alleged. The man did not recall how many times he was struck, Westrick said.

There was no indication of whether a verbal confrontation happened before the attack occurred, Westrick said.

Police do not have suspects identified but do have leads in the case, Westrick said. Police interviewed “a lot of people” at the coffee shop after it happened, he said.

The victim described the male who asked him for the cigarette as wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, while there is no estimated age range in the report, Westrick said.

The police department, fire department and an ambulance responded to the scene. The victim was transported to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital with various cuts to the face, Westrick said.
