Police this week responded to a report of a pit bull attacking another dog and its owner in the 100 block of Recht Street, according to a press release from the department.

Police allege the suspected victim was walking his dog at 8 a.m. Saturday on a leash along Recht Street when a loose pit bull confronted him and attacked the man’s dog, inflicting a mortal wound, according to police. The pit bull also bit the man as he attempted to fend off the animal, police said.

The man was treated at the hospital and later released. His dog’s injuries were severe, however, and a veterinarian attempted life-saving efforts before determining it could not recover before euthanizing the pet, according to police

An animal control officer contacted the pit bull’s owner and seized the dog for quarantine and more investigation, according to police.

As far as a potential penalty for the pit bull’s owner, police spokesman Sgt. David Westrick said he believes investigators were still “going through the process.”

Westrick said incidents with loose dogs and people happen “all the time.”

“We want to be able to encourage responsible ownership with making sure your dog’s kenneled or at least in a secure area,” he said.

Police note how all dogs in the city must be licensed with proof of current vaccinations, that a dog is deemed at large if unsecured off premises, and how dangerous dogs having the propensity to be vicious must be kept in a secure pen.
