An unidentified Hollister man was seriously injured by a powerful explosion that ripped through his apartment Thursday.

The thundering boom of an explosion in an apartment at 1071 Caputo Court rocked the early evening calm in the residential cul-de-sac.

“I shot right out of my seat when I heard the explosion,” said a 23-year-old Caputo Court resident who refused to give her name. “It was almost like something had crashed into the house.”

The 6:20 p.m. explosion touched off a small fire in the apartment, but it was quickly snuffed out by members of the Hollister Fire Department.

Meanwhile, paramedics weaved their way past shards of shattered glass that were apparently blown clear of their window panes by the force of the explosion.

They took the unidentified and unconscious man to Hazel Hawkins Hospital for treatment.

The blast was so intense at its center that it reportedly blew a portion of the apartment wall off of the building’s foundations.

Investigators with the Hollister Police Department said they did not know what caused the explosion, and that they did not know if the explosion was an accident or intentional.

The cause of the blast is still under investigation, however, police said they expect to release more details of the blast later today.
