Hollister – Police arrested a local man Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of using an ax to vandalize a neighbor’s bicycle and car.

Capt. Bob Brooks of the Hollister Police Department said he was initially told the man was threatening other people with an ax, but the situation turned out to be less serious.

“This looks more like a neighborhood dispute,” Brooks said.

When a Free Lance reporter arrived at the scene near the intersection of Fourth and Locust streets, a red Thunderbird was being towed away.

Most of the car’s windows were smashed in.

The bicycle has been returned to its owner, Brooks said.

A 44-year-old Hollister man was arrested for one count of felony vandalism and one count of misdemeanor vandalism. As of press time Wednesday, he was held at the San Benito County jail in lieu of $11,000 bail.

Neither neighborhood residents nor police officers were injured, Brooks said, although the arrested man had a cut on the bridge of his nose.

The man did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, Brooks said, and he did not resist arrest.

“It seemed really bad when it came out, but it turned out not to be that bad,” he said.
