Mayor Tony Bruscia at tonight’s City Council meeting plans to appoint members to a Fire Task Force to examine whether consolidating fire protection services countywide could save money.

Bruscia proposed the task force two months ago as Hollister faces millions of dollars in projected shortfalls over the next few years. San Benito has its share of money problems too, which could lead to closure during winter of the Beaver Dam department in Paicines if the current budget recommendation gets approved.

Bruscia expects somewhere between seven and nine people to be on the committee. He mentioned some people he’s already talked with, including Fire Chief Bill Garringer, county Supervisor Pat Loe and San Juan Oaks Golf Club general manager Scott Fuller.

And he doesn’t expect creating a new fire district will be the only issue up for discussion, he said.

He wants to examine what other emergency and preventative services, aside from fire protection, that firefighters could provide in the future.

“There’s a whole host of things that can be looked at,” he said.

Once the council approves his task force appointments, Bruscia expects meetings to ensue shortly thereafter.
