A 59-year-old San Juan Bautista man was killed in a motorcycle accident Tuesday night at the intersection of Highway 156 and Rocks Road near Highway 101.

David Sanchez was westbound on Highway 156 in a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he attempted to turn left onto Rocks Road and the driver of a large Ford delivery truck heading eastbound couldn’t stop and crashed into Sanchez, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

Sanchez was thrown from his bike and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews. Authorities said Sanchez was wearing a helmet and was “properly restrained” in the motorcycle.

The driver and passenger of the delivery truck were uninjured.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but authorities said alcohol was not a factor.

CHP spokesman Chris Armstrong said the setting sun might have been a factor. The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. and Sanchez was driving west facing the sun when he turned left – directly in the path of the eastbound delivery truck.

“It’s important for motorcycle riders to remember that it is sometimes difficult for other vehicles to see them because they are small,” Armstrong said. “Motorcycle riders need to take extra precautions to make sure they stay safe.”
