Hollister – New alternative schools Principal Angel Rivera is making plans for the future after eight days on the job.

Rivera was hired by the San Benito County Office of Education on Aug. 13 to be principal at San Andreas Continuation School, Santa Ana Opportunity School, Pinnacles Community School and Pinnacles Court School.

Rivera is replacing longtime principal Mike Sanchez, promoted in the spring to the position of assistant principal in charge of alternative education and support programs. He said Sanchez has served as a guide and helped him around the grounds.

Sanchez will serve as principal at the Pinnacles schools until Rivera is settled in at San Andreas and Santa Ana schools.

Entering week two on the job – and the first week with students – Rivera said he’s getting comfortable in the job while working on plans for student success.

“I’m working on student achievement. The expectation is to have students reading at grade level and doing math at grade level,” he said.

Rivera said he has felt well-received by staff and students at both schools.

“(The students) come up and they say, ‘Welcome, Mr. Rivera,'” he said. “I’ve never seen anything run so smoothly.”

This year, Rivera said he hopes to not only focus on student achievement but also on making sure both alternative schools are ready for the accreditation visit slated for the spring.
