Letter: Warnings from Texas mayor over fracking

I recently attended the presentation by Mr. Tillman, the former mayor of Dish, Texas who was forced to sell his dream house on six acres at a loss and move to another town that was not over a shale deposit. As soon as he moved his two young sons began to recover from their nosebleeds and asthma. I found his story to be a wakeup call for those of us who do live over shale deposits that are potential oil and gas wells.

Letter: Concerns with US military action

It took the U.S. military about 10 years to produce a stable government (per VP Joe Biden) capable of functioning as an independent nation. It took President Obama less than three years to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Letter: Voters beware when it comes to hydraulic fracturing

Voters preparing for the November ballot proposal to ban hydraulic fracturing in the county should be aware of the swarms of seismic activity in the middle USA which began in 2008. A recent report in the current (25 July) issue of Science attributes this activity to fluid migration from wastewater disposal wells associated with the fracturing procedure.

Guest View: Grand jury report highlights merits of water project

The San Benito County Grand Jury has performed a tremendous service to county residents by highlighting the benefits of the Hollister Urban Area Water Project (HUAWP) in its 2013-2014 report. As the “Watchdogs of the Community,” the Grand Jury is a neutral, non-partisan group of citizens who are responsible for investigating public agencies and organizations and determine if they are operating in the best interests of San Benito County as a whole. We applaud the effort involved in producing the entire report and appreciate the time and energy it demands.

About every two years as elections approach, an article, (often followed by a column and then an editorial) appears in the San Benito County press questioning voter-authorized Measure E expenditures, or some aspect of the college’s plans for expanded services in San Benito County.

Guest View: Ditch the smartphones for parks

Today, it's not uncommon for both children and adults to spend hours upon hours with their heads buried in sleek, addictive electronic devices, such as smartphones and tablets. We've replaced social interaction, and traditional play and entertainment with these little gadgets that constantly beep and ring, keeping us informed about what Jane had for lunch, an appointment we can't miss, an email we must respond to immediately, or even who has the highest score on Angry Birds and Candy Crush Saga.

Letter: Cooperative attitude toward agriculture

My family is in its fourth generation of farming in California. We have grown apricots, prunes, cherries and walnuts since the 1920s in the greater Santa Clara Valley.

Letter: Dominguez family needs our help

Recently, Dave and Kelly Dominguez awoke at 3 a.m. to a nightmare. Their only daughter, Kaylin, had suffered a massive, life-threatening seizure and was rushed to the hospital. Kaylin remained at Stanford for five weeks, fighting valiantly for her life. Dave and Kelly never left her side. Once Kaylin was stabilized, she was moved to a care facility in Marin County, where she remains today with her parents beside her watching for any sign of their beautiful daughter’s smile or return to normal.
