With the passing of Joe Paterno I felt it necessary to write this letter in the hopes that people here in Hollister might choose to rise above the muck and mire and remember Joe for what he accomplished in his career and lifetime.

If high school district officials hope to gain voters' trust in supporting a bond measure to build a second campus, they must adjust their current direction of rushing toward groundbreaking on this monumental proposal.

At some point, the San Benito High School District must expand and build a second campus. That some point, however, is nowhere near the radar in a county where residents are primarily concerned about getting by in the short term rather than betting the farm on the future.

As Hollister and San Benito County officials consider consolidation of fire services - and leaving Calfire out of the mix - it is important to remember that the same leaders still have a police merger to weigh.

Hollister trustees' cancellation of school bus service in response to a state cut will not only hit home harder than other reductions in recent years, but it also puts the district in a precarious position when it comes to offering equal access to public education.

The candidates were "Snow White" (Michelle Bachmann), "Greedy" (Mitt Romney), "Grumpy" (Newt Gingrich), "Holy" (Rick Santorum), "Gropey" (Herman Cain), "Doc" (Dr. Ron Paul), "Spacey" (Rick Perry) - and, uh, who's the Dwarf after Spacey? "Oops!"
