Guest View: Hollister’s short-term debt, long-term liability

Hollister can’t take on long-term debt with short-term money.

Guest View: Mayor’s update for 2016

As we begin 2016, I’d like to share with everyone an update on what has been going on in the City of Hollister and what the plans are for the future. I believe that this year, 2016, is the year that we can finally move to the next phase of improving our existing infrastructure, quality of life projects and growing our economic picture that will benefit our community for years to come.

Guest View: Will our leaders fight for Gavilan’s future?

Gavilan College’s broken promises for a San Benito Education Center amount to a watershed event for our future. The county’s political and community leadership have a critical decision to make. Are they going to fight to force Gavilan College to restore commitment of the $108 million, 2004 Measure E bond, or are they going to slink away and write off decades of the county’s future and the futures of many of its residents who must have more educational opportunities closer to home?

Community Board: Marlow case underscores flaws in bill

Due to a new state law that is far too broad in nature, one of Hollister’s most notorious criminals has a chance for freedom in April.

Guest View: Launch local ‘People Committee’

Let’s minimize the hospital visits and get our community healthy. We should have workshops and programs for the people to get help and get healthy. We need to help the people. Health is one of the most important things in our lives. Getting fit and eating right. I have been getting fit and healthy for a few years now and it really has changed my life. I want the people of my community and especially the kids to be able to learn and get the proper knowledge on what they are putting into their bodies. What are we eating and feeding our children; we don’t know what’s in McDonald's, and all these fast food restaurants. There should be classes to teach the kids and the adults. It should also be free to the community. I am here to plan for the future and help. We can put notices in the city and county water bill of when the class will take place, and send flyers home with students from school. There are many ways to go about it and it’s something that will really help out our community.

Question of the Week Answers: Funding San Juan security

Panelists and readers answered the following: With a string of recent burglaries in San Juan Bautista, should the sheriff’s office, which contracts with the Mission City for 44 hours per week, spend more time there at the county’s expense?

Guest View: New chairman’s speech was a ‘breath of fresh air’

What a breath of fresh air it was for me to hear our chairperson of the board of supervisors at the opening of the New Year. Mr. Rivas gave a brief but compelling presentation of his hopes and aims for the New Year for San Benito County residents. He is a most articulate and rational spokesperson for his philosophy of county government and his aims for this county. Most of all he is a person that speaks clearly, simply and truthfully and from a genuine commitment to the well being of the people of San Benito County. He is a supervisor we can TRUST.

Guest View: Rivas should have taken more time for victories

Last week saw the scheduled change of leadership at the San Benito County Board of Supervisors as Supervisor Robert Rivas assumed the chairmanship from Supervisor Margie Barrios. The chairmanship that rotates through the five districts means no one is left out, but it also means that the emphasis can change radically every year. Most key issues take more than a year to resolve. This system may be one reason the county is notoriously slow in dealing with so many important subjects. Now down to brass tacks.

Letter: Gavilan College trustee responds to criticism

In response to a view from Aurelio Zuniga on Gavilan’s use of local bond money on a Coyote Valley police academy:
