Hollister resident Paul James “P.J.” Hodgson died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital after a brief illness. He was 83.

Mr. Hodgson was born in Castle, Okfuskee County, Okla. and came to Hollister from Sunnyvale 12 years ago. He lived in Sunnyvale for 45 years, and the service station he owned there sponsored many baseball, basketball and bowling teams. He was an avid supporter of youth sports in Santa Clara County and coached Little League teams as well as at St. Francis High School when his son attended the school. He also worked for Hewlett-Packard in the mail division for many years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a former member of the Sunnyvale Elks Lodge. He enjoyed fishing in the Delta, golf, bowling, playing cards, going to Lake Tahoe and watching horse racing at Bay Meadows.

Mr. Hodgson was the next-to-last survivor of nine siblings. He is survived by his wife, Catherine “Kay” Hodgson of Hollister; his sister, Gaila Hodgson of Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Alan Hodgson, in 1997.

Visitation will be today from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home, at which time the family will receive those paying respects.

Family and friends will leave the funeral home Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass at Sacred Heart Church at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum with military rites by Hollister VFW Post 9242.

Memorials are preferred to San Benito Home Health Care in care of the funeral home.
