May Grayshock was born in West New York, NJ almost 96 years ago, one of seven children to her first generation Italian immigrant parents, Fiore Grasso and Philomena (Mazzoni) Grasso.
She married Joseph Edward Grayshock, on October 12, 1941. She moved to California the next year with her infant daughter, Phyllis, to join her Marine Corps husband, who was stationed in Santa Barbara, CA, prior to being sent to the South Pacific for the duration of WWII. Daughter, Lois, was born while stationed there in 1943
They opted to remain in California after the war was over, moving to San Martin, Santa Maria, Monterey, and finally settling in San Jose, where their 3rd daughter, Terri, was born in 1952.
May was a loving stay-at-home mother to her three girls until the first two were graduated and married.
She took a job with Social Services and worked until her retirement in 1974.
Joe and May decided to relocate one last time in 2003, moving to Hollister, CA, to be closer to their daughters. There, after 66 years of marriage, her beloved husband died.
She lived independently and maintained her own home on South St. until her death.
Loving, funny, feisty, the quote,“none knew thee, but to love thee” from a poem by Fitz-Green Halleck, most certainly applied to May Grayshock.
Friends and family grieve her loss. Brother, Ralph Grasso; daughters, Phyllis Pierce, Lois Kincaid, and Terri Grayshock; grandchildren, John and Grace Cardinalli, Kara and Steve Loupe; great-grandchildren, Johnny Cardinalli, Olivia Loupe, and Madeline Loupe. Joe and May are reunited.
