Hollister – Police arrested a Hollister man suspected of carjacking after a hasty foot chase through the backyards of several homes near San Benito High School Wednesday, according to law enforcement officials.

Police arrested Elias Avila, 29, for felony carjacking and misdemeanor brandishing of a deadly weapon on Richardson Drive shortly after 12:30pm, Hollister police Capt. Richard Vasquez said Wednesday.

Police believe the man carjacked a woman’s late model Kia sedan Tuesday night just before 1am and threatened her with a knife in the parking lot of Aladdin Bail Bonds in San Jose, Vasquez said. The woman, who Elias had a relationship with, was not injured and later told police that he had threatened to kill her if she reported the incident. She told police that he forced her into the passenger seat of the car and waved a black knife at her, Vasquez said. After a brief struggle for the keys, she fled the car on foot.

Officers on patrol spotted the car Wednesday afternoon, and when they attempted to pull over the driver, Avila fled on foot. A short chase ensued and Avila was finally apprehended and taken into custody. He was booked into the San Benito County jail.
