A resident reported that an all-terrain vehicle with a unique calf scale was stolen from a southern San Benito County ranch early this week, and the owner is offering a $1,000 reward for its return.
The theft occurred at the Charron Ranch in the Paicines area either Monday night or early Tuesday, said ranch owner Steve Charron. The ATV, commonly called a quad, had a unique scale attached to it for weighing calves. The ATV is a Polaris 500 Sportsmen, and the scale was custom made and worth about $2,000, said ranch manager Danny Chaves.
The ranch typically uses the scale in the months of August, September and October, Chaves said. Earlier this week, the ranchers had been trying to find another one for the weighing, said Charron, who provided a picture of the quad and scale.
Chaves explained that the quad included a stainless steel rack made for the front of it. The quad itself is green in color. The owner, meanwhile, has offered that $1,000 reward for its return.
Chaves said he tracked the thieves the following day and believes that they broke through a fence with wires.
“Whatever outfit they used to haul it off with, it’s probably going to have damage to the front right (of the vehicle),” he said.
