 Robert was born August 7, 1916, the second of three sons of Robert H. and Jennie Y. Shepherd, in Corvallis, OR, where his father was Professor of Vocational Education at Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University).
 In 1924, his family moved to Huber, OR, where he graduated from Beaverton High School. He later graduated from the University of Maryland and pursued graduate studies with the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and Portland State University in Portland, OR.
 Robert married Helen Cavaness in 1940 and the couple raised two daughters, Suzanne and Sally, while living both stateside and abroad. Widowed in 2003, he remarried in 2010 to Margaret MacNaughton of Morgan Hill, CA.
 Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941, Robert later accepted a post-war commission inthe regular Army and retired in 1969 with the rank of Colonel. During his military career, he was stationed in Europe during WWII, with postwar tours in both France and Germany. He also served in Korea (1947), post-war Japan, and Vietnam.
 Robert’s military awards include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and numerous theater and campaign awards.
 In 1961, Robert qualified as a Military Aviator, held Pilot ratings in both fixed wing and rotary winged aircraft, and logged over 8000 hours of pilot time.
 After retiring in 1969, he returned to Beaverton, OR and pursued additional educational and business interests until 1987, when he and Helen moved to Monterey, CA. In 2001, they moved to Morgan Hill, CA.
 Robert was a member of BPOE No 1862 (Hillsboro, Oregon), AF&am Hancock Lodge No 311 (Fort Leavenworth, Kansas), of the Scottish Rite Bodies! (FortLeavenworth), and AAONMS MOSLAH Shriner Temple (Fort Worth, TX).
 Preceded in death by his first wife, Helen, his brothers, Frank and Donald, and his children, (Suzanne in 1963 and Sally in 2014). R
 obert is survived by his second wife, Margaret, his son-in-law, David Large, his grandchildren, Sean Large (Shelley) and Cynthia Bardouka-Large (Dean), step-child, Melinda Pahre (Mike), and five great- grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
