The San Benito boy soccer team opened its season with a 3-0-shutout win over Yerba Buena of San Jose on Tuesday.

The Balers scored two goals in the second half to extend a 1-0 halftime lead to beat the Aztec Warriors in San Jose. Junior Steven Johst led the way with a pair of goals. Junior Ricardo Becerra scored the Balers’ final goal.

Senior Ricardo Roque finished with two assists and keeper Jesus Coronado finished with six saves in the victory.

The Balers hosted Aptos on Thursday. Look online for an update.

SBHS girls soccer

The 2012 season couldn’t have started any better for the San Benito girls soccer team Wednesday. The Balers dominated and defeated Alvarez 6-0 on the road.

Illana Woods scored two goals for the Balers. Kristen Callanta, Chace Miguel, Alexandra Osborn and Jessica Sanchez Paredes each added one goal in the win.

The Balers fired 20 shots on the net, while the Eagles could only muster three opportunities.

“The girls did a wonderful job working as a team from the first minute of warming up to the last minute of stepping off of the field,” SBHS head coach Becky Bonner said. “I was proud of the teams passing, communication, effort and support of one another in all circumstances.”

San Benito hosts Soledad at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

Anzar boys soccer

The Hawks allowed three second-half goals and fell 4-0 to Monterey High School during Wednesday’s season opener in Monterey.

Anzar struggled to put offensive pressure on the Toreadors – getting only one shot – and couldn’t stop Monterey’s second-half onslaught.

Four Toreadors – Hyunsik Lee, Edgar Plascencia, Brian Arango and Jonathan Perez – scored in the Monterey win.

Anzar’s Guillermo Banuelos did his best in goal, blocking three shots.

The Hawks host KIPP Collegiate at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Anzar girls soccer

In their 2012 season opener against Pacific Grove, the Hawks could never find their defensive or offensive footing and lost 4-0 to the Breakers.

Pacific Grove scored two goals in first and second half to pull away with the victory. The game was the opening match of the seventh annual Watsonville Tournament. The Hawks continued the tournament Thursday against Monte Vista Christian. Look online for an update.

Anzar boys basketball

Anzar opened its season with a 59-19 loss to King City on Wednesday.

The Hawks will have a week before its next game against Gilroy High at 7 p.m. Dec. 5.

Gavilan Women’s Basketball

After scoring only 16 points in its second game in eight years, the Gavilan College women’s basketball team took its first halftime lead Monday in a 57-56 loss to Marin.

The Rams stared the game with a fast start, taking a 36-28 lead at the halftime. Andreinna Casteneda scored a team-high 12 points for the Rams, who fell to 0-3 during the year.

Divena Flores and Breanna Hernandez each added 10 points in the loss.

Gavilan finished with eight players with points.

After going into halftime with a eight point lead, Marin went on a second-half run to out score the Rams 29-20 in the games final minutes.

The Rams travel to Ukiah on Friday to play Lassen College in the first game of the Mendocino Tournament. Look online for an update.
