Anzar soccer blanks King City 2-0
Hollister – The San Benito boys basketball team put together a clean, solid effort to earn a 48-32 win over Pacific Grove at home Tuesday.

“Everybody played well,” coach John Becerra said. “Everybody did their job. We didn’t turn over the ball much. We played just good aggressive basketball.”

Todd Janisch nearly equaled the entire output of the Breakers as he lit up the scoreboard to the tune of a game-high 27 points.

The Haybalers sprinted to a 27-10 halftime lead before holding steady in the second half.

Nine different players scored for San Benito as it saw a strong display of team basketball.

“Today was a good win, (Pacific Grove’s) a good ball club,” Becerra said. “Everybody contributed, we play well played as a team.”

King City – Anzar responded to losing its first Mission Trail Athletic League game on Friday by traveling to King City and blanking the Mustangs 2-0 on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Erin Deleissegues produced her fifth shutout of the season by saving 12 shots as the Hawks improved to 5-1 in league play and 5-3 overall.

“It was a good really hard-fought game,” coach Deric McLean said. “It’s probably the best we’ve looked all season when confronted with pressure.”

Mackenzie Quaid scored the first goal for Anzar and Leah Jimenez scored late in the first half to make it 2-0 when she fielded a long kick from Deleissegues, who picked up the assist.

The defense took over from there, keeping King City out of the net as it maintained the two-goal lead.

“The defense is really gelling back there,” McLean said.

The ‘Balers’ Tri-County Athletic League opener against Notre Dame was postponed Tuesday.

The game, which was scheduled to be played at Cal State Monterey Bay, has yet to be rescheduled but was not played because the school did not want a game to take place on the field with the rainy conditions.
