A 34-year-old San Jose man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder after officers found a Hollister woman who had been strangled nearly unconscious, the Hollister Police Department reported.

Officer Rosie Betanio, a spokeswoman for the department, said officers responded to a Hollister residence at about 12:40 a.m. Saturday after an open 911 call.

The officers were flagged down by the man, and eventually found a distraught 44-year-old Hollister woman in the residence, Betanio said.

Authorities believe the couple divorced but had been dating again, officers said.

Betanio said they had gone out for drinks earlier and began arguing when they returned home.

That’s when the man began hitting the woman all over her body and eventually strangled her, Betanio said.

The woman neared unconsciousness several times, police said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, domestic violence and false imprisonment, all felonies, and a misdemeanor count of vandalism, the department reported.

Betanio said the woman believed the man was trying to kill her.

“The victim was very distraught,” Betanio said, “as she should be.”

The San Jose man is being held at the San Benito County Jail in lieu of $561,000. He has not been charged
