Home sewer movies were on tap at a San Juan Bautista special City Council meeting Tuesday.

The Council approved the purchase of a video system for viewing inside sewer pipes and a hydraulic excavator to be used in water and sewer work, said City Manager Larry Cain.

The two pieces of equipment will put the city back almost $40,000, which are being purchased from a lease with San Benito Bank, Cain said.

The Council also heard a presentation by Mandy Rose, director of the Integrated Waste Management Department for San Benito County. Rose told the Council Hollister and the county will request funding from San Juan Bautista in the future, but the Council took no formal action on the item.Rose will return to the Council’s regular meeting in May to further discuss the integrated waste program and how much the county will ask for, he said.

Mary Hisa Coron, the director of the city’s Summer Enrichment Program, also asked the Council for $5,000 to fund this year’s program. The agency has provided San Juan youth with activities to beat the dog-days of summer for the past four years.

The Council told Coron they wanted more details before making any formal decision.

“The city will probably fund it,” he said. “They just need to have all their ducks in a row first.”

The city’s Chamber of Commerce, which was slated to present more information about a billboard on Highway 101 they hope to purchase, asked for more time to prepare, Cain said.

The chamber believes the billboard, which would be located just south of the city, would help bring more tourists to San Juan off the busy highway, Cain said.

A more detailed presentation will be given at the next regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 18 at 7 p.m.
