To secure resident’s peace of mind while they spend precious summer vacation moments away from home, the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department is reviving its summer vacation watch.
Sheriff deputies will check county residents homes two to three times a day, making sure no problems arise while they are on vacation, said Sheriff Curtis Hill.
“We’re doing it as a courtesy to the community,” Hill said. “It gives people more of a level of comfort knowing that deputies will be there.”
The program began years ago, but declined in popularity over the past few years, said Lt. Pat Turturici.
“We stopped doing it for awhile – it was something that got overlooked,” Turturici said. “We just want people to know that we do have this program, we’ll make sure everything’s OK… and we’ll do it free of charge.”
The department doesn’t place any restrictions on the service, but will check whatever a resident asks be checked, Hill said.
“We do everything,” he said.
To request the service a resident can access a form over the department’s Web site, call the department or have a form sent to their home, Hill said.
The form details any special requests, such as making sure lights are on, checking certain doors and windows, whether a dog will be on the premises and who to contact in an emergency, he said.
In the past the service was popular with residents, and the department hopes to rejuvenate the relationship it builds, Hill said.
“We want to start it up again, and what better time than now,” he said.
County residents interested in participating in the Sheriff Department’s summer vacation watch can log onto the Web site at www.sbcsheriff.org or call the department at (831) 636-4080.
