San Juan Bautista has a sheriff’s department field office for the first time in 18 months, and officials involved in the partnership to open the branch at San Juan School will hold a dedication Monday.

The San Benito County Sheriff’s Office has agreed with the Aromas-San Juan Unified School District and the City of San Juan Bautista on the partnership. The field office is located in a former science lab at the school, said Deputy Rich Brown, who is assigned to the San Juan Bautista area.

The dedication ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Monday at the school.

San Juan has been without a field office since the department moved it out of the Windmill Market, meaning deputies covering the area had to drive back into Hollister for report filing. Brown noted how it will be open to all working deputies, highway patrol officers, probation department officers and the gang coordinator.

The public also will have convenient access, he said, and the location can host neighborhood watch meetings.

Brown approached Aromas-San Juan district Superintendent Willard McCabe a week ago about the possibility of using space, and the school official offered the classroom. All sides agreed to a two year contract, which Brown expects to be extended.

Before being at the Windmill Market, the sheriff’s San Juan field office had been located next to Daisy’s Saloon downtown.
