Anzar girls defeat Overfelt for second win of season
Hollister – The shots couldn’t fall for the San Benito girls basketball team and the Haybalers fell to Scotts Valley 51-37 at home Thursday.
The Falcons (6-2) had the hot hand early on and behind a pair of 3-pointers they jumped out to an 8-1 lead.
Scotts Valley led by as much as eight in the first quarter before San Benito found a little rhythm. Two straight hoops by Elena Fata, who finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, made it 14-10 and the first quarter closed with the Falcons leading 16-10.
The ‘Balers made it a two-point game in the second quarter when Vanessa Farias, who paced San Benito with 14 points, scored on a putback and a reverse layup to make it 20-18.
Scotts Valley responded with a 9-0 run to take charge of the game and it led at the half 35-23.
Things slowed down for both teams the third quarter, with the Falcons outscoring the ‘Balers 8-7 to add slightly to their advantage.
San Benito tried to use its press in the fourth quarter to get back in the game. While it forced several turnovers and did a solid job with offensive rebounding, the ‘Balers couldn’t connect on shots from the outside and wasn’t able to pull to within reach.
Chelsea Welch scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the effort for Scotts Valley. Alex Price added 12 points and Brittany Hunter added 11 points.
Girls Basketball
Jessica Staley scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to help Anzar improve to 2-3 on the season in the 38-26 win over Overfelt Thursday night.
Andra Fujita added nine points for Anzar, which was tied with the Royals at 17-all at halftime before pulling away.
The Hawks outscored Overfelt 11-6 in the third quarter to take a five-point lead and put the Royals away with a 10-4 advantage in the fourth.
