 Silvina Afonso Bettencourt was born in 1920 in Beira, Sao Jorge in the Azores Islands. She arrived in America in 1951 with her three young children, joining her husband with dreams of a better life.

 Settling in Gilroy, CA she led a simpler life than most, growing the majority of her own produce and livestock at her home. She had an extraordinary “Green Thumb” and a determined work ethic. She loved the outdoors, supplying friends and neighbors with her garden’s bounty.

 She had many talents and was very creative. Often crocheting and making her own garments, quilts and many other items. A woman of integrity and honesty, she cared for all those around her and had many friends.

 She was active in the I.F.D.E.S Portuguese Lodges as a longtime member for over 40 years. And also a member of S.P.R.S.I organization. Silvina passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday May, 5, 2013.  

 She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph L. Bettencourt in 1962 and her sister, Germana Cabral, who lived with her up until the time of her passing in May 2011.

 Silvina is survived by two sisters, Isabel Sousa and Lourdes Afonso of Beira, Sao Jorge, Acores, and by her children Manuel Bettencourt (Peggy) of Pacines, CA, Joe Bettencourt (Debbie) of Gilroy, CA, Mary Cavanaugh (Ted) of Oregon. Theresa Vasquez (Cesar) of Morgan Hill, CA, John Bettencourt of Colorado., 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two more on the way.
