Behind a pair of first-half goals, the Anzar girls’ soccer team rebounded from its first league loss of the season on Tuesday with a 2-0 shutout victory over Georgiana Bruce Kirby in Santa Cruz.

Myra Quezada and Hakima Hossainzadeh each provided goals in the first half for the Hawks, who improve to 6-1 in the Coastal Athletic League, 8-5-1 overall.

Anzar was unable to score in the second half, but head coach Carlos Flores said the Hawks never lost control of the game.

“Overall, I think we played a good game. We needed to win, to get the Gonzales loss off our minds,” Flores said, referring to the 2-1 defeat Anzar suffered last Thursday against the defending champion Spartans — the Hawks’ first loss in CAL play this season.

“I think the girls responded well,” Flores added.

Quezada’s goal in the 20th minute off an assist by Ali Bautista was all Anzar would need in the game, although Hossainzadeh tacked on an unassisted insurance goal in the 36th minute to stake the Hawks to a two-goal lead at halftime.

The 2-0 edge held until the final whistle.

“We had a couple of opportunities. We just didn’t capitalize,” Flores said of the second half. “[Kirby] started played kind of defensive in the back and their keeper made some big saves.”

Anzar will host Marina on Thursday in San Juan Bautista before hitting the road next Monday for a key matchup against Pacific Collegiate. Kickoff for both games is 4 p.m.
