District Attorney John Sarsfield planned to propose a reorganization of his Office at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. But with Chairman Bob Cruz absent, his peers asked to continue the item to the next meeting, June 1, according to County Administrative Officer Terrence May.

Sarsfield’s proposal to lay off the Office’s lone investigator and hire an entry-level deputy district attorney would save the county an estimated $25,000 to $30,000 annually, according to a staff report.

But it would also bump the head of the Office’s Victim Witness division to a level of authority below that of the office administrator, according to a staff report drawn up by Sarsfield. The District Attorney is alleged to be having an affair with the office administrator by Jaime De La Cruz’s campaign adviser Ignacio Velazquez.

Currently, the investigator, victim witness coordinator, office administrator and deputy district attorneys have equal authority. Under Sarsfield’s proposal, the other Victim Witness employee – a position titled victim witness advocate – would take a drop in command as well and would be equal to the office assistants.

May said the proposal was “aimed mainly at abolishing the investigator and replacing them with an entry level deputy district attorney.” Sarsfield submitted the plan last week, May said.
