Ruben A. Garcia, the 40-year-old Hollister man accused of shooting his mother in the face, met with attorney Greg LaForge before a short hearing at San Benito Superior Court today.
Dressed in a black and white striped jumpsuit and shackled at his ankles and wrists, Garcia sat still and showed little emotion among other prisoners who were openly laughing and waving to people in the courtroom audience.
Police said Garcia got into a financial argument with his mother on July 1 and in the heat of the dispute, shot her with handgun three times, in her face, arm and hand.
His mother survived the attack after being treated at a Bay Area hospital.
Garcia was being searched for by authorities when, two days after the shooting, a neighbor noticed Garcia’s truck parked near Cerra Vista Elementary School and called police. Garcia had gone back to his home and locked himself inside. And after a four-hour police standoff – which forced the lockdown of Cerra Vista and the evacuation of several blocks of the surrounding neighborhood – police coaxed Garcia out of the house and took him to San Benito County Jail.
Superior Court Judge Alan Hedegard set Garcia’s next court date for July 18 and sent him back to jail where he is being held on $500,000 bail.
