The San Benito High swim team split matches with Valley Christian and Seaside in non-conference action last week, but scored several Central Coast Section qualifying times in the process.

Valley Christian defeated both the Baler boys and Lady Balers on Thursday by margins of 107-69 and 100-69, respectively. However, freshman Czarina Isleta posted CCS times in two races when she recorded a 2:14.69 in the 200 IM and a 1:00.66 in the 100 fly.

Sophomore transfer Quinn Six also recorded a pair of CCS-qualifying times when he compiled a 2:06.73 in the 200 IM and a 56.85 in the 100 back.

Meanwhile, the boys 200 medley relay, which didn’t qualify to the CCS last year, qualified on Thursday when it clocked a 1:46.77.

“I was so excited,” San Benito head coach Christine Schafer said of the foursome, which includes Nick Angulo, Josh Schafer, Graham Spurzem and Quinn Six.

The girls 200 medley relay, which includes swimmers Rachel Estep, Caitlin Schafer, Demi Gatrell and Isleta, also qualified with a 2:00.94.

On Friday against visiting Seaside, San Benito rebounded to defeat the Spartans — the boys winning 87-39, the girls following suit by a 77-53 margin.

And Isleta posted two more CCS times as well. The San Benito freshman recorded a 2:01.54 in the 200 free and a 1:10.79 in the 100 breast. Freshman Graham Spurzem also qualified in the 100 back when he posted a 57.09.

“There’s a lot of strength at the younger end,” Schafer said.

San Benito is off until next Wednesday, March 10, when it will host Christopher High at 3:30 p.m.
