After an unknown suspect skimmed $1,683 in funds during the
Gilroy Garlic Festival from the Gavilan College Football team, a
spokeswoman said the incident is unfortunate but the team will
still have money to buy its uniforms.
After an unknown suspect skimmed $1,683 in funds during the Gilroy Garlic Festival from the Gavilan College Football team, a spokeswoman said the incident is unfortunate but the team will still have money to buy its uniforms.
Police are investigating a cash theft that occurred at 4:30 p.m. August 1 at the college located on 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
According to Jan Bernstein-Chargin, director of public information for Gavilan, someone reached into the team’s cash box and grabbed a handful of money while the coach was getting ready to transport the funds to the school’s business office.
The cash was taken from a total of $10,000 raised by the football team’s margarita booth at the Garlic Festival July 29-31.
As for any suspects named in the case, police have not identified potential leads. Bernstein is not aware of any speculation related to possible suspects, either.
“It’s terrible to lose that much money,” she said. “But the good news is most of what they earned at the festival, they still have. They will be able to buy team equipment and uniforms this year.”
