Shorthanded and short of points, the Baler boys team fell
runner-up to Salinas for the second straight year on Friday
— the Cowboys defending the league crown by an all-too narrow
131-128 margin. The three-time defending champion Lady Balers
compiled 66 points, meanwhile, and finished fifth behind
league-champion Gilroy, which won the TCAL for the first time in 21
years.
HOLLISTER
David Kret didn’t know exactly where his team stood following the 800-meter event at Friday’s Tri-County Athletic League Championships in Gilroy. But he had a pretty good sense of how important each event would be in the end.
“It’s coming down to every point for the win,” said the sophomore Kret, moments after he took first place in the 800 with a time of 1:57.25. “Every point matters.”
And that’s what made Friday’s TCAL Championships a bitter pill to swallow for San Benito — every point did matter.

“It is what it is,” San Benito boys coach Iran White said.
After having gone undefeated in the regular season — which supplied it with six additional points entering Friday’s finals — San Benito produced a respectable comeback against Salinas, but couldn’t overcome a recent spate of injuries that prevented the Balers from pocketing key points in certain events.
The three-time defending champion Lady Balers compiled 66 points, meanwhile, and finished fifth behind league-champion Gilroy, which won the TCAL for the first time in 21 years.
“We were down at one point 75-30, and we picked away,” White said. “But by the end of the meet it wasn’t enough.”
Depth was perhaps the difference. While San Benito wasn’t without its fair share of TCAL contenders — it had five individual champions in six different events to Salinas’ two individual champions — the Balers certainly missed the efforts of Scott Medina, and Jose Castillo in the 1,600 meters.
Castillo was battling an injury after he sprained his right ankle more than two weeks ago, and did not compete in the 1,600 as a result after having missed the qualifier during Tuesday’s TCAL Trials.
But rested and running in only one event on Friday, the San Benito junior cruised to the TCAL title in the 3,200 with a time of 9:46.02, besting Salinas’ Max Bell by more than five seconds.
“Once I got my pace, my breathing, my rhythm, I took off,” said Castillo, whose ankle was understandably tender following the two-mile event. “It was the least I could do for the team.”
The loss of Medina perhaps ran a little deeper, though. The San Benito junior owns top-10 marks in the Central Coast Section in both the 300 hurdles and high jump, and was also a leg on the CCS-leading 4×400 relay team for the Balers.
Seen at TCALs with a walking boot on his right foot, Medina technically could have competed on Friday, but it only would have further damaged his chances of competing next season.
“He argued with me for an hour through text messages,” White said of Medina, who didn’t want to cut his season short, despite the foot injury. “That kid would have been willing to break his foot for the team to win.
“But I hate to play would-a, could-a, should-a … Salinas won the TCAL championship and our hats go off to them.”
Without Medina, San Benito still managed to find points in the high jump and hurdle events. Dustin Franco was third in the high jump at 5-10, Jacob Funk was second in the 300 hurdles in 41.82, and Lucas Haro was second in the 110 hurdles with a personal-record time of 16.28.
Each will advance to Saturday’s Central Coast Section Semifinals, as will Isaac Navarrete, who was third in the 100 with a time of 11.40.
“He was our top hurdler until he broke his foot,” Haro said of Medina. “I just wanted to get the best time because we were down. That’s what got me motivated.”
San Benito also earned individual titles in the 200 and 400, as Jason Roascio posted times of 22.03 and 48.93, respectively, while Frankie Martinez properly defended his title in the discus (144-05) and Enrique Ramos picked up the title in the shot put (49-10 1/2).
Only Sophie Coelho found the top of the podium for the Lady Balers when she cleared 10-02 in the pole vault on Friday and defeated Notre Dame’s Lucy Kurzava by a foot.
But after having won the TCAL three years in a row, and having lost only one dual meet during the regular season, San Benito’s fifth-place finish left a disappointing feeling on Friday night, especially for those seniors.
“We did what we could do. It was just strong competition,” said Coelho, who advanced to the CCS Semifinals in the pole vault and 4×100 relay, which took third in 50.75. “Overall, the other teams came up (strong) where we came up short.”
There were few dry eyes among the Lady Balers following Friday’s conclusion, though. But senior Melisah Cortez couldn’t help but look toward the future.
“It’s a young group and we did all we can,” she said. “We had a long season and we did really good throughout the season. Life will go on and we’ll see how they do next year in developing.”
The Lady Balers will send five individuals to CCS, including Coelho, Monique Lassaga-Bishop (3rd in pole vault, 8-08), Krystal Alnas (3rd in shot put, 33-07), Jennifer Temperino (3rd in discus, 100-07) and Michelle Duarte, who extended her senior season another meet after taking third in the 800 with a time of 2:22.72.
“But,” Duarte said, “it’s sad that it’s my last year and we lost (the TCAL title).”
