Two people died in an accident on Pacheco Pass Highway shortly before 10 a.m. today when a pickup truck crossed the yellow line and struck a car, sending it down an embankment and killing the two residents in the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the 2004 Ford F350 was westbound on Pacheco Pass, about five miles southwest of Dinosaur Point, when he crossed to the other side of the road and collided head-on with an eastbound Honda Civic, said Officer Jaime Rios, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

It is unclear at this point why the pickup truck driver – 45-year-old Martin Teeling of Aptos – entered oncoming traffic, Rios said at the scene. Teeling was uninjured in the accident and was talking to an investigator as authorities examined the area.

The CHP identified one of the victims as a 29-year-old woman from Sunnyvale. Her body was covered on the grass outside of the car, which faced the road after rolling down the hill. Rios expected to have information on the male driver later after his removal from the vehicle. All three people involved were wearing safety belts, according to the CHP.

The accident occurred on the Santa Clara County side of the highway. Calfire and San Benito County fire responded as well.

Today’s accident adds to a bad couple of weeks on the roads for the area. There were two fatal accidents on Highway 101 just six days apart, the first one two weeks ago. Also on Tuesday, another death occurred on Highway 156. A total of five people have been killed during the recent span.
