A San Juan Bautista man with prior convictions is set to spend three years in state prison for stealing a tip jar containing $3 at the Togo’s sandwich shop in Hollister and demanding a customer’s wallet.
Rion Redko, 21, pleaded guilty Friday to charges in relation to the June 13 theft at the Togo’s in the 1700 block of Airline Highway.
After buying and eating a sandwich at the restaurant, authorities alleged Redko took the jar with $3 inside and demanded a woman’s wallet twice before fleeing. Redko threatened that he would shoot the woman if she didn’t give him the wallet, authorities alleged. When she declined to hand it over, he ran off.
Deputies from the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office arrested him later that day after workers at the Togo’s confirmed his identity.
On Friday, he pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery count with special circumstances, his prior convictions, enhancing the penalty.
In the sentence, visiting Judge Robert O’Ferrell considered Redko’s prior record that includes San Benito County convictions in 2008 and 2009 – for felony assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, and on two separate occasions for carrying a dirk or dagger.
He was sentenced to more than seven months in county jail for those prior crimes.
Redko on Friday was credited with 91 days of time served in jail since his June arrest. When arrested, he had been on parole.
