Walter Bakowsky died peacefully on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at the Zen Hospice Project Guest House in San Francisco, CA.

Walter was born in 1918 in New York City to immigrant parents: Marie Bakowsky (later Marie Fousekis) from the Ukraine, and Marcus Kollitis from Greece.

As a teenager, he moved to San Francisco where he

graduated from Commerce High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a hardship discharge to help support the family after his step-father, James Fousekis, died

unexpectedly. He later worked as a paint salesman and then for many years as a retail clerk.

He married Aspasia “Essie” Perdicalis in 1946 and they remained together until her death in 1990. They had two sons: Stephen and Ted. Among Walt’s interests were hiking, photography, stamp collecting and listening to classical music.

In addition to Essie, Walter was predeceased by his grandson, Nicholas.

He is survived by Stephen and Ted and Ted’s wife Lorine. He is also survived by his brother James T. Fousekis and sister Penny Rosso, by grandchildren Jennifer, Monica, Morgan, Diana and Holland,

and great-grandchildren Tallulah and Gracyn.

Friends may visit Friday April 29, 2011, from 10:15 A.M. and are invited to attend the Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M. at the Greek Orthodox Memorial
