Hollister – A 34-year-old Hollister woman was shot in the neck Monday night in the Mission Oaks Mobile Home Park in Hollister’s third attempted murder this year, the Hollister Police Department reported.
Jane Infante was flown by helicopter to an undisclosed Bay Area hospital after one of six shots fired at the car in which she had been riding struck her in the neck at about 9:34pm Monday, said Officer Rosie Betanio, a spokeswoman for the police department.
Police have no suspects in the shooting. Betanio said investigators do not know whether the shooting was gang-related, but consider the incident a drive-by.
Three other passengers were not injured in the shooting, including a 3-year-old and an 8-year-old boy, and 28-year-old Vincent Gutierrez, Betanio said. Gutierrez was driving the 2006 Nissan Maxima.
As Gutierrez pulled into the mobile home park from San Juan Road, he heard several loud pops and realized Infante had been shot, Betanio said. One of the shots broke the car’s back window, Betanio said.
Bill Berg, who lives near the entrance of the mobile home park, said he heard six shots, turned off his lights and looked outside.
“The only thing I saw was a small car going around the corner out of the park,” Berg said.
Berg said hearing the gunshots so close scared both him and his dog.
“We hear gunshots from across the street all the time,” Berg said.
Karl Kauffold, who lives around the corner from where the shooting occurred, said he had just arrived home when he heard the gunfire. Kauffold ran outside and saw the tail lights of a car fleeing the mobile home park.
“They must have been sitting there waiting for them,” Kauffold said.
Kauffold immediately called police.
“I called the police because most people around here won’t,” he said.
The two previous attempted murders this year both have been gang-related, authorities said.
“The possibility is always there that it’s gang-related, and further investigation will determine that,” Betanio said of Monday night’s shooting.
The first attempted murder of the year occurred when a 15-year-old Hollister boy was stabbed six times Jan. 22 on Westside Boulevard. Authorities believe the stabbing was gang-related and perpetrated by out-of-town Sureño street gang members.
The other attempted murder occurred when Hollister resident Anthony Munoz was shot four times with a .45-caliber pistol April 1 on Canal Alley, also on the west side of town. Authorities suspect a Norteño street gang faction was involved with the shooting.
There have been three homicides in Hollister this year. Police do not have suspects in two of the cases.
Authorities encourage anyone with information regarding the shooting to call the Hollister Police Department at 636-4330 and ask for Detective Sgt. Carlos Reynoso, supervisor of the detective bureau.
