Upon arrival, firefighters found approximately one to two acres already involved in grass and brush near Monroe Canyon. Air tankers dropped retardant to slow the spread of the fire until ground resources could arrive on scene, according to a statement from the agency.

Calfire says it made an aggressive initial attack and contained the fire to three acres at about 7:12 p.m. No structures were threatened by the fire.

Calfire wants to remind the public that maintaining 100 feet of defensible space may help to save lives and property. Although no structures were immediately threatened by the fire, the state agency wants to remind the public to be safe and practice exit drills in the home. South Monterey County Fire Protection District contracts with Calfire for administrative services and chief officer coverage in addition to the volunteer firefighters who staff equipment when called for an emergency response.

Calfire and the South Monterey County Fire Protection District responded to the incident with eight fire engines, two chief officers, an air tactical observation unit, two air tankers, a helicopter with helitack crew, two bulldozers, two hand crews and a fire investigator, for a total of about 80 firefighters fighting the fire.
