Coming soon to downtown Hollister: Upgraded sidewalks, more bicycle racks, new pedestrian lighting and new trash receptacles.

The Downtown Beautification project, 12 years in the making, will finally see the light of day thanks to the current City Council’s approval of the $4.4 million project at their Monday meeting.

Upgraded sidewalks will mean people can walk without fear of falling because of the cracked pavement. The brownish-red pavers, as seen in front of the Klauer Building, will add a rustic charm to our downtown.

More bicycle racks will mean people will have a place to store their bikes safely. It could eventually lead to more people riding their bikes to work, unclogging the busy downtown thoroughfare. It could possibly lead to the City Council lifting parking limits on downtown streets since people will be riding their bikes to work. What a concept.

By adding new pedestrian lighting, people won’t be afraid to come downtown at night. They will finally be able to see where they are going and won’t have to second guess their footwork in the dark. The upgraded sidewalks will be able to be seen at night. Businesses will be able to stay open later because their clientele will be more willing to venture out into downtown because they will be able to see where they are going.

New trash receptacles mean people will finally have a place to put their trash, other than just throwing it into our streets.

Local contractors are going to have the chance to bid on the project and we hope one of them gets it. After all, who is going to know how to give us what we want more than one of our own? The boasting rights to the beautification project should be in the rightful hands of one of our esteemed contractors – not an out-of-town contractor.

The project is slated to begin in January and we hope they are able to keep the expected completion date of early July 2004.

With special poles to be installed along San Benito Street, allowing banners to dangle over the street, it would be especially nifty to see multiple flags hanging throughout downtown during the Hollister Independence Rally. What a way to show our patriotism.

With the RDA having the money ready to go, the go-ahead from the City Council and the determination to finish beautifying our downtown, Hollister will get the face-lift it rightly deserves, bringing more people to local businesses.
