Dear Editor:

Wednesday, Jan. 15 marks the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most important leaders of the 20th century.

His life was dedicated to expanding the human and democratic rights of African Americans and other oppressed people in America.

His work came to an abrupt and untimely halt when he was violently assassinated on April 4, 1968 while supporting the sanitation workers struggle in Memphis, Tenn.

Dr. King challenged the racist institutions that historically subjugated people of color to second-class status, which resulted from a history of violence, intimidation, discrimination and inequality in America.

Through his speeches, writings and acts of civil disobedience he opposed the systemic causes of oppression, inspiring millions of people to organize for freedom, equality, justice and peace.

This momentum, known as the civil rights movement, began to break down lily-white barriers in employment, education, housing and politics.

Furthermore, Dr. King spoke out against economic imperialism and criticized the U.S. government’s international policies, including opposing the Vietnam War.

Dr. King made some of the most significant contributions to democracy in America. However, his mission was never completed.

Much of the social, economic and political inequality that he sought to overcome still exists. All people who value peace, equality and justice will honor his legacy by continuing the struggle for a better society.

More can be learned about Dr. King by reading, A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. (1991 Harper Collins).
