Elizabeth Steidley passed away peacefully at the Salinas home of her daughter surrounded by family members on December 26, 2007.

She was born on December 8, 1915, in San Martin, California, to Emil and Frances Herback. Betty, as she was known to her family and friends, was raised in San Martin, attended local schools and graduated from Live Oak High School in 1933. She attended St. Francis School of Nursing in San Francisco and received her RN diploma in 1935. She practiced nursing in the Gilroy area for more than 50 years. In 1934 she married Bernis Steidley.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Bernis and brother Herb. She is survived by her daughter, Jeri Olivas (Nathan) and grandchildren Cindy Wilson (Fynn) of Ventura, Nancy Torres (Mitchell) of Salinas and Nathan Olivas (Kathy) of Carmel Valley. She leaves seven great-grandchildren: Jasmine and Finn Wilson, Savannah and Alexandra Torres and Nathan, Nick and Zachary Olivas. She is also survived by her sister, Lillian Pine of Gilroy, niece and nephews, Liz Musal (Michael) of Soquel, Tim Pine of Anchorage, Alaska, Greg and Phil Herback and grand niece and nephews Christina, Steve and Jeff Musal of Soquel.

Elizabeth’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Anthony Sintetos for his loving care and compassion and Judy Walbeck and her angels for their care and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 4760, Salinas, CA 93912.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at St. Stevens Episcopal Church, 651 Broadway, Gilroy, CA at 11:00 a.m.
