Jack Obata, 94 passed away peacefully with his children by his side, on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Jack was born on May 20, 1920 in Hollister, CA.
Son of the late Toraichi and Shikao Obata. Husband of the late Atsuko Obata (2012). Father of Alan Obata (Kevin Heath) of Gilroy and Teri Hinmon (Tom) of Gilroy. Grandfather of Lauren Mantani (Matthew), Jackie Iwanaga and Damon Iwanaga and his dog, Coco. Brother of Joe, James, and Bob Obata, Tomi Kobara, and the late Yasuko, Ichiro, George, Katie Inouye, Tom and Bill Obata.
Jack spent his childhood with his family in the Cienaga Hills of Hollister during the depression. Later, the family moved closer to town and Jack graduated Hollister High as a proud Haybaler.
D uring World War II, the family was interned at a Japanese relocation camp in Poston, AZ where he was proud of his role as the chief cook.
Jack took advantage of a program that allowed him to work various jobs in Colorado and Chicago during the war. Despite the circumstances, he looked at the travel experiences in a positive way.
After the war, Jack returned to Hollister with his family and continued the farming business. This led to a life long passion of farming in Hollister and Gilroy with his brothers Tom and Joe.
Jack married Atsuko Ikeda in 1956 and raised two children, Alan and Teri.
After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and sharing with them his passions of fishing and gardening.
Although he was a man of few words, his gentle and giving nature spoke volumes.
