A 29-year-old Tres Pinos man was arrested last weekend on suspicion of arson after a vegetation fire started near the first block of Quien Sabe Road, the sheriff’s office reported.

Calfire had responded to the fire in the afternoon June 14, last Sunday, and a resident in the area around the same time reported seeing people shooting flares into the air that had been landing in a field, said Lt. Roy Iler of the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies responded. They located two men sitting on a porch and found flares and a flare gun sitting near them, Iler said.

Deputies arrested the Tres Pinos man but did not suspect the other man was involved, the sheriff’s spokesman said.

It was unclear as of publication whether the district attorney’s office charged the suspect.
