The same could be said Friday as the Hawks got a strong outing on the mound from senior Adrian Monroy, but managed only two hits in a 3-1 loss to King City.
“Adrian pitched a really good game,” Anzar coach Andrew Barragan said of Monroy, who went the distance, needing only 85 pitches as he allowed three runs on three hits. “We just didn’t get the run support. That’s starting to take a toll on our pitchers.”
The Hawks struck first in this one. In the top of the third, Cody Mendiola walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
But the Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. After a single, Monroy tried to pick a runner off at first and the ball got past first baseman Scott Benson and the runner moved to third. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice to tie it.
King City took the lead in the fifth when another fielders choice produced a run and the Mustangs added an insurance run in the sixth.
Ryan Waller collected both hits for Anzar, singling twice.
“We’re in every game, that’s the upside,” Barragan said. “We’re battling, we’re hanging in there. Our pitchers are keeping us in the game. It’s just a matter of our hitters coming around.”
