A structure fire Sunday on the 2500 block of Southside Road caused extensive damage, and while there were no smoke detectors in the house, none of the seven residents were home at the time.
San Benito County, Calfire and Hollister departments responded at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Several pets also were rescued by the firefighters.
According to a press release from the county department, the first engine arrived and the crew quickly began suppressing the fire, which had originated from flammable materials placed too close to a pot-belly stove in the living room, according to the department.
Firefighters quickly contained it, but the home had “already sustained extensive fire, heat and smoke damage to the walls and ceiling areas of the entire structure,” according to the release.
None of the residents were there at the time of the fire, and the rescued pets were uninjured, according to the statement.
Regarding the absence of smoke detectors in this fire and three other recent home fires, Capt. Dave Lantis of the Hollister Fire Department stressed that citizens should have detectors and check them at least twice a year.
“These are basic, simple pieces of equipment that save lives,” he said.
