Letter: Muenzer’s closing had help from schools
I read your opinion column about the closing of Muenzer's after 102 years. You wrote a very nice obituary and basically that it died of natural causes, but I would like to point out that it had a lot of help from the school systems in San Benito County, and based upon how you want to look at it, it may have died from anything from an assisted suicide, all the way up to Murder 2. For many years Muenzer's worked closely with the schools of San Benito county to sell their Physical Education uniforms, and for many years made donations back to the programs at the local schools, but beginning about six years ago one by one each of the schools abandoned them beginning with Rancho and ending with San Benito High School. Having been the Physical Education department chair at San Benito High School for several years I worked closely with Jan and Jerry to have them be the exclusive supplier of our Physical Education uniforms, but one by one schools thought they could make more money by bypassing Muenzer's and selling their own P.E. clothes. I also blame the school boards who no longer supported Physical Education departments in mantaining a specific uniform for physical education, (but that is a whole different letter). Either way removing Rancho, Maze, Anzar, and San Benito High School P.E. uniforms hurt them tremendously. I would argue that most people went in and bought two uniforms, a lock, maybe socks and tennis shoes, and probably a sweat shirt. I would guess anywhere from $30 to $150 each fall, multiplied by thousands of families who came in and you have, in my opinion, the critical mass that pushed it over the edge. I hope all those who slowly choked Muenzer's out sleep well at night.
Letter: Don’t be desensitized by liberal agenda
On Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that slaves in rebel states shall be "forever free." At the time of his death he was enshrined as “The Great Emancipator” and the writing and signing of this document was considered the most hallowed accomplishment of his presidency that led to the 13th Amendment. On this sesquicentennial, our President, the first African American to serve in the same office did not mark the Proclamation’s anniversary in any way nor was their much fanfare given to it by the media. This was both shameful and disappointing and speaks to the unpatriotic, secular attitude that permeates our society. We need to remember and acknowledge our Nation’s great historical past and not become desensitized by a liberal, socialistic agenda.
Letter: Response to piece about schools, armed guards
In today's Free Lance (December 28, 2012, page A4), Frank Perez of San Benito High School states that "I believe I speak for all educators" in opposing armed guards in schools. Doesn't SBHS have a police officer on site? Isn't that officer armed? If not, what good are they? Mr. Perez is entitled to his opinion. I am entitled to mine. Mine is that teachers are arrogant, overpaid left wing ideologues who fill our young peoples' minds with socialist garbage. I believe that I am Taxed Enough Already.
Letter: Arming school guards is not the answer
The National Rifle Association finally ended its reticence on the Newton, Connecticut school tragedy by erratically firing off statements that put the lives of schoolchildren in ever increasing peril.
Letter: Grateful for those who helped with Lights On Celebration
It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a community to put on a successful Lights On Celebration! We are eternally grateful to all of the generous and wonderful business and individuals who donated their resources, time and talents for this year’s Lights On Celebration event.
Letter: Former mayoral candidate Snow speaks out
I am writing this letter on how the voting process for elections was done by the city and county. I don’t feel it was done correctly, I have freedom of speech to say that, and how I was treated as a candidate by the city and county. The process was not done properly and fairly. The county could not handle the votes that were processed by absentee ballots and regular voting at the polls.
