A shooting on San Benito Street Friday morning left the occupants of the residence uninjured and Hollister police with no leads on who committed the crime.
Around 1 a.m., five gunshots were fired, hitting the wall and window of an apartment located at 201 San Benito St.
Police believe the shooter used a small caliber weapon, but are unsure of the exact make and model, said Sgt. Dan Winn.
Hollister police officers were a block away from the apartment complex where the shooting took place and heard the shots, Winn said.
“There’s an echo in the downtown area,” Winn said. “They couldn’t be sure of the direction because the sound bounces off buildings.”
While officers were looking for the source of the shots they saw several people who began running when they saw the police car, Winn said.
The individuals couldn’t be located and at the time, no 911 call had come in notifying the police of the whereabouts of the shooting, Winn said.
“A couple people at the residence, rather than calling, went over to the mom’s house,” he said. “About 45 minutes after it happened an officer was flagged down by her.”
The mother of the woman living in the apartment, who ran over to the apartment complex from her home nearby, mentioned to the officer that the incident could be in connection with a family member with gang affiliations who is in jail, Winn said.
“The details are very sketchy… and nothing has been confirmed,” he said. “We don’t have any witnesses other than the people inside who heard the shots.”
The incident is under investigation.
