Police this week arrested a 15-year-old on suspicion of burglary after using the surveillance system on a home near the victim’s house to identify leads.
At about noon Monday, Officer Bill Hutchison responded to the 800 block of Washington Street for a reported residential burglary. He noticed the neighbor’s surveillance system with cameras pointed toward the victim’s residence and got in contact with those neighbors to view the video, which helped him develop “strong suspect leads,” according to a police statement.
On Tuesday, the officer recovered stolen items from the 15-year-old’s home. Police arrested the teenager a short time later at San Benito High School and booked him into juvenile hall.
A second suspect was in the surveillance video as well, and the case remains under investigation, according to police.
“The Hollister Police Department would like to acknowledge and thank the neighbors on the victim’s street for assisting in our investigation. It’s through examples like this that neighborhoods can assist the police department in reducing crime,” according to the statement.
