tournament

The San Benito softball team took round one against Everett Alvarez 6-0 Thursday in Tri-County Athletic League action, as the two teams will meet up for round two on Saturday in the Gold Division of the Charlie Miguel Invitational Tournament in Sunnyvale.
Bri Romero was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Elena Fata connected for a solo home run in the fourth inning to power San Benito, which received near-perfect pitching performances from Marisa Ibarra and Page Miguel.
Ibarra started the game and threw five innings, allowing no runs and striking out nine. San Benito’s ace had a perfect game into the fifth inning when a pop fly in the infield dropped after a miscommunication among players, manager Scott Smith said.
Miguel came in for the Lady ‘Balers and pitched the remaining two innings, allowing just a single hit while striking out two.
The two teams will meet up again Saturday at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex. In the second game, Smith said he would like to see more discipline at the plate.
“A lot better at-bats,” Smith said. “The pitching was a little slower than maybe the kids had seen in recent games. We were out in front.”
The Lady ‘Balers are now 2-0 in the TCAL, 8-3 overall.
They’ll play Everett Alvarez Saturday at 10:30 p.m. The winner will advance to play the winner of Notre Dame – Salinas/Pioneer at 1:30 p.m.
