After posting an impressive 1-0 victory over league-leading Pacific Collegiate on Monday, the Anzar Hawks had their three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday when they lost to Gonzales 2-1.

The host Spartans carried a 2-0 lead midway through the second half when Anzar’s Brianna McCain put the Hawks on the scoreboard in the 65th minute off an assist from Sydnee Masuen.

However, the lone goal was all Anzar would get against two-loss Gonzales, which improves to 7-2 in the Coastal Athletic League as a result.

“We didn’t have many opportunities,” Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said. “The field was really large and it really threw us off our game.”

Gonzales led 1-0 at halftime.

The Spartans made it 2-0 when Flores switched formations — from a 4-4-2 to a 3-4-3 — in a search for more offense, and McCain followed shortly thereafter with a Hawks goal.

“We were still knocking on the door, but they just didn’t go our way,” Flores said.

The Hawks are now 4-3 in the CAL and 8-6 overall. The loss positions Anzar in third place behind second-place Gonzales and first-place Pacific Collegiate. There are three games remaining in the season.

Anzar will host Marina on Saturday at 1 p.m.
