A 6-year-old Prunedale girl was shot while inside a mobile home last night when two unknown suspects confronted a group outside the residence and opened fire, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl was in critical condition last night after being airlifted to a Santa Clara County hospital and today has been upgraded to stable condition, said Cmdr. Mike Richards with the sheriff’s office.

It happened when two unknown suspects wearing ski masks shortly after 7:30 p.m. arrived at the home in the 9000 block of Prunedale South Road and started shooting, with about six rounds fired, Richards said. One of the gunshots penetrated the outside of the mobile home and hit the young girl in the abdomen, he said.

The crime appears to be a gang-related shooting, Richards said. Anyone with knowledge is asked to call the office’s anonymous tip line at (888) 833-4847.
